Egypt in the news

We are beginning our study of North Africa with Egypt. Egypt has been a focus in the world news this week. Explain what is happening in Egypt. What do you think of this situation? What would you do if you were an Egyptian living in Egypt today?

57 comments:

  1. What is happening in Egypt is, the people are fighting for a say in the presidential election. They want a democracy. I think that the Egyptians are right because they should have a say in their lives. If I were an Egyptian, I would be protesting with most of the other Egyptians fighting for a say in their leader and their lives.

  2. The protesting in Egypt is terrifying to me. If I were an Egyptian living in Egypt I would do more about it. I would set up armies where King Tut's tomb and precious memorabilia is located. I would have the innocent peoples of Egypt evacuated just in case of any destruction in the area. All families will be evacuated in areas free of violence.

  3. The scenes in Egypt have been dramatic as thousands turn out onto the streets demanding that President Hosni Mubarak resign after 30 years in power. The Egyptian protests have led to a number of responses from Mubarak's government including and unpredicted interternet blackout as well as an over-night curfew. To my point of view, President Mubarak seems to be an unfair leader who does not give Egyptians their equal rights. I feel that Hosni Mubarak should finally resign as Egypt's leader, even if he doesn't want to. Egypt is his country and he should do what is best for it. If I lived in Egypt today, my reaction to the situation would be to protest, but not by making a huge scene with fires, guns, etc. I would simply walk the streets with a sign demanding my rights.

  4. I think that situation in Egypt is very dangerous. I think the people of Egypt are scared and are getting ready of what will happen next. I think that people are upset and worried about their families. The situation is causing people to be frighten and also getting worried. This is what i think the situation is doing to egyptians.

  5. The citizens of Egypt are outraged by the unreasonable laws made by the president and they want to be a democracy. I think the president should be out of office because he is making laws that are crazy and the citizens are mad. If I were a citizen i would protest respectively for a change. although I would stay away from the violent affects of the outrageous laws.

  6. Egypt

The people of Egypt are trying to propect themselves from looters who are police officers that are burning cars and buildings and are also randomly attacking people on the street. The people of Egypt want a new president, their current president,Hosni Mubarak has been president since October 15,1981 and people want a new president. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt today I would try to help to stop looters and maybe a new president.

  7. Today in Egypt people are protesting because they want freedom and a new president. I think that the people of Egypt have a right to be doing what they are doing. I think this because they deserve freedom and independence, but at the same time they do not need to go to the extreme. If I were an Egyptian living in Egypt today I would protest, but I would not protest after curfew or go to the extreme.

  8. People in Egypt want their president to quit. Their president has been Egypt's president for 30 years! I think if everyone is sick of him or tired of him the should protest because 30 years is a very long time to be president! If i think he was a great president i would not disagree with the other people that want him to quit. I would protest and maybe make signs that say " We are tired of you!! Thirty years is too much!". I would also talk about it with some of my friends and spread the word so he is could leave or maybe be forced to leave if everyone is tired of him.

The Egyptian people want their currant president Hosni Mubarak, to resign from power. The Egyptian people are very upset with him because of the steps he has taken to reform his regime. The people of Egypt are also upset because they want to become democratic. They think that none of their wishes will be made known with him as president. I would not protest because of all the people being killed on the streets. The only reason why I would leave my house is to get food. It seems way to dangerous out there from all of the videos we have been watching.

  10. It appears that Egypt's people are angry with the president,Hosni. It seems to be that the people of Egypt want democracy. I think the situation is very bad because looters are running around the street. If I was an Egyptian I would be very worried and scared and wanting to leave.

  11. The protests in Egypt have come about because of the high cost of living, corruption in the government and failed economic policies. Egyptians of all ages have had enough of the 30 year reign of their President Hosni Mubarak. I think the Egyptian people have the right to speak out and demand a fair government. If I were an Egyptian living in Egypt today, I would be protesting alongside my fellow citizens.

  12. In Egypt, there are people who are protesting against poverty, unemployment, and the government, especially the President. People have gotten hurt and even some were killed. Buildings have been destroyed and fires started. I don't like the situation in Egypt because it is not right to do what the protesters are doing but the people should be able to work with the President. If I lived in Egypt, I would want to try and leave this country because it is scary.

  13. In Egypt people are protesting that they do not want their president anymore. He has been their president for about thirty years. I think that they should not take care of this situation with violence. They should talk it out peacefully. If I were an Egyptian living in Egypt today I would go out of the place where all of this is happening so that nothing happens to me or my family.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In egypt people want a democratic economy so that they could vote. When they voted the voting was teased so that the president they have now would always win. If i lived in egypt i would protect my stuff and the rest of my families stuff from looters and i would also like to have a democratic country.

    ReplyDelete
  15. In Egypt there are riots and many people want the president to resign. I think this situation of Egypt should have a democracy and hold elections. I would protest the government.

    ReplyDelete
  16. People are trying to overthrow government in Egypt and fight against the president. If I were in Egypt I would try to earn my civil rights back and try to support the protesters.

  17. In Egypt, Egyptians are protesting that the president Hosni Mubarak step down from his leadership. The Egyptians are angered over corruption, unemployment, poverty and decades of political repression. I think that like America, Egyptians should be able to vote between presidential electives instead of just one man.
If I lived in Egypt I would protest but just with signs not with pitchforks and guns.

  18. Hosni Mubarak has been president of Egypt for 30 years. The Egyptians are furious at Hosni and want him out of office immediately. It is clear the Egyptians don't want a democracy and they are showing that to Hosni. I personally think the Egyptians are overreacting, but it is their lives so i cannot protest. They should say whats on their mind and what's on their mind is that they want Hosni Mubarak to resign. If I was an Egyptian resident I would not do much. There is no need for Hosni to resign even if the crowds want him to. I would just watch and see what happens.

  19. There are a lot of ways to explain what is going on in Egypt but this is just one. Egypt's economy is going down because the unemployment rate is going up and people are getting upset. Me personally I don't think it is wrong because they are upset because I would be too. If I was living in Egypt today I would speak my mind because I do what I believe in. I wouldn't do any damage, but I would protest peacefully. Hopefully the problems in Egypt will come to an end.

The people of Egypt are protesting against the president, Hosni Mubarak. If I were a citizen there I would buy a plane ticket and go to any place in the world but there because I`m afraid of the looters and the protest and do not want to get involved in that difficult situation.

  21. Egypt wants a democratic society. The people of Egypt also want Preside Hosni Mubarak to resign. Therefore, they are protesting. I think the people of Egypt need to take part in peaceful protesting. If I were an Egyptian living in Egypt today, I would take part in peaceful protesting.

  22. The people in Egypt want President Hosni Mubarak to resign from the office after 30 years of being in power. Many people are taking to the street and protesting with pitchforks, guns, etc. The Egyptians are also mad about poverty, corrution, unempolyment, and there have been decades of political repression. If I were an Egyptian, living in Egypt I would peacefully protest with signs, but I would not protest with guns and setting cars on fire.

  23. The protesting in Egypt is terrifying to me. The people of Egypt are protesting against the president. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt I would be very scared, and go into hiding far away were people are living or get my parents to move to somewhere else.

  24. Basically, the events taking place in Egypt are protests. The people want a democratic change in their government. This change includes not only the right to vote, but also free speech.
The protests began on January 25, 2011, and still happening. The police are attempting to quell the uprising by using methods such as tear gas and water cannons. If I were living in the area, I would want the change in government. It is very important to stand up for what you believe in.

  25. What is happening in Egypt is that the people want a say in who they can vote for as president. I agree with the Egyptians because they do need to have a say in things like that especially if they are voting for a president who will run their country. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt today I would want to get out of Egypt as fast as I could. If I stayed there I wouldn’t know if it would be safe enough to live there.

  26. What is going on in Egypt these past few days are protests. The protests are to throw Hosni Mubarak, the president of Egypt for three decades, out of power. If I was I an Egyptian I would be fearful of the looting and the riots.
What I think of this situation is that it will bring an already global-crisis to a very chaotic point. Egypt may come out of this event with a peaceful transition, but I do not think this is likely. Egypt could break into civil war, which is a very possible idea. Another thing that might happen is Egypt could simple crumble. Already the events that have happened have caused chaos for tourists and has troubled world leaders. It also is a part of other protests in Tunisia, Yemen and Jordan. If these protests continue, it will hurt tourism, may inspire protests in other countries and will definitely have great effect to oil, among other parts of the economy. This is what I think of this situation.

  27. The president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, has been president for 30 years. The people of Egypt are protesting, because they want him to reign. All of the people want a democracy. It is an unsafe place to be during this time. If I were there, I think I would protest peacefully for Hosni Mubarak to resign. I think it is unfair he was the president for so long, and someone else should be able to have a chance to get elected fairly.

    ReplyDelete
  28. People in Egypt want President Hosni Mubarak to leave office. Egyptians want democracy. The protesting has turned violent. Many people have died and there are concerns about what will happen to Egypt. I think the situation in Egypt is scary. If I were and Egyptian living in Egypt today, I would stand up for democracy.

  29. In Egypt today they are protesting about the president whose name is Hosni Mubarak because he has been in office for thirty years he came into office because of the assassination of former president Anwar El Sadat. They want a Democratic society and I would to but I would do a silent protest not a violent protest.

  30. In Egypt the Egyptian's want their president Hosni Mubarack to step down from his position which I believe he should because he has been their president for 30 years and they are finally telling him they want him out of office. Egyptian's want a democracy and a free election. They are showing it by protesting peacefully. If I lived in Egypt I would try to stay as far away as possible from the protesting because I would be terrified. I would want to get out of Egypt with my family as soon as I could for our safety. Many people would like to leave but they have shut down all airports leaving tourist from all around the world stuck in Egypt. I believe that what Hosni Mubarack is wrong and that they should give Egypt a free election.

  31. The Egyptians are trying to get more rights for themselves so they are doing a peaceful protest. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt, I would join in the peaceful protest because I would like to have my own rights as my own human being. I think the people of Egypt should be able to choose democracy if they want it.

  32. In Egypt, people are protesting against the current president Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak has been the president for the past 31 years. People of Egypt want Mubarak to leave office. Mubarak has not bowed down to the protesters yet but he sacked his Cabinet and is forming a new government. This situation is surprising to me because Mubarak has been the leader for so long and it is almost random that all of the sudden the people don't want him in charge anymore. If I was a boy in egypt today I would try my best to stay out of the situation. From what I know, Mubarak has been a good leader but very strict. I would not protest against him.

  33. The people in Egypt want a new president and freedom because the one they have is not being fair and is making bad laws. This president has been in office for over 30 years and that is way too long. President Mubarak has made a rule that he can only be the president and no one else can but other people can run but can't win. If I was in Egypt today I would be very scared and would want to leave and go to another country. If I was a tourist I would be even more scared because I would want to get back home. Egypt is very dangerous right now.

  34. The civilians in Egypt are protesting against the president because they want democracy in their country.I think they should talk nicely with the president and try to work it out without fighting and the death of many.I think this situation is important because if this does not end soon many Egyptians will die.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In Egypt everyone is protesting against their president Hosni Mubarak. He has been the president for 30 years. It was the law that no one was allowed on the ballot but the president. Everyone does not like this. If I were an Egyptian in Egypt today I would stand against the president because He is not very fair and he will not let go of the power he has. I would try to tell him what he is doing wrong and get everyone to tell him and then maybe he will let other people be on the ballot too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The people of Egypt are protesting against their government. There is much poverty and corruption. I feel for those people who have this situation in their life . Some people today still live in poverty. People also can experience corruption. If I were living in Egypt I would probably join in with the protesting . Hopefully my input would add pressure to the government to correct the problems.

  37. In Egypt a coalition of opposition gropes called for a million people to take to Cario’s streets on Tuesday to demand the removal of President Hosni Mubarak. He named a new government Monday in an apparent attempt to defuse the weeklong political upheaval. I think the people have to stand up for their rights. They are doing the right thing by trying to do it peacefully. If I were if Egypt today, I would be scared. The people don’t know if they will die, or live, get hurt, or not. They just don't know. Its out of their control. All they can do is pray.

  38. This week in Egypt there is a very big the problem, the citizens of Egypt want a different president beacuause the present president has been in the office for the last 30 years. I think this is bad for the country because people may not want to come an visit Egypt now. I also think the way they are handling the situation is not that great. If I was living in Egypt while this was happening I would probally just want to stay out of it, so I can stay safe.

  39. The past few days in Egypt have been terrible for people and the ancient satues there. The Egyption people are protesting for there president to step down. It is a huge problem for everybody. Many people are protesting for freedom and many are protesting for a new president.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Most of the problem in Egypt is that the people are unhappy with the government leaders. Thier president ,Hosni Mubarak has been president for 30 years, so the Egyptians want a new president. Many people now think it is a bad idea to go there because many people are rioting. Many countries are asking their citizens to return home because of the danger.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The present problem in Egypt today is that the people of Egypt are protesting for a say in their elections. They want to be able to be a part of the election, and select who in running. Basically, Egypt wants a democracy. In Egypt right now, the people are protesting and it is not going well. Most citizens believe that their president of now 30 years, has overstayed his time in service, and they would like new elections to be held where he is not the only one on the ballot. I do not think that this situation is good. I think this because the situation is getting violent, and some even say that the police officers are starting most of the fights. If I were in Egypt today, I would be scared, and I would not know if I should protest or not, due to safety reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Egyptians are protesting against the Egyptian President because he has been the president for 30 years. It is not good that he has been the president for 30 years because everything stays the same. The Egyptian people should have the choice to elect someone new. I think it is good that the young people used the internet to organize the protests but they should have made sure that the protests were not violent. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt today, I wouldn't get involved in the protests because I would be afraid that I would get hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In Egypt, there has been about eight days of protest. These people are protesting because they want a new president. The current president Hosni Mubarack has been president for about thirty years and it has been illegal to vote for anyone else running for office. As a result, the Egyptians would like a new president. They want a democracy in their country and will not stop until they get one. I think that the violence in Egypt is pointless. I also think that the violence should completely stop and people should handle this issue in a peaceful way. If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt during this situation I would try to promote peaceful protest, but I would also try to keep safe because the things going on are very harmful.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Today on the world news they said a million gathered in the square and they protested against the President Mubarak to step down. Also on the news Mubarak made a statement that he would finish his term and not seek re/election in September but protesters are not happy with the decision. But I would stay away from the protesters if I was in Egypt because of the civil unrest.

  45. Today in Egypt people are losing their homes , getting laid off and losing their jobs. The peple of Egypt are getting angry about this and are having a peacful protest. They want a new president. Their presindent has been president for 30 years. If i were a citizen in Egypt i would move back home with my family and start a new life in my home town.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well in Egypt, tens of thousands of people are protesting there president. I think that in this situation, the people of Egypt have every right to protest if they think it is that bad, also it will definitely have a big impact in what will happen in the future with Egypt. If I were in Egypt right now, what I would do in Egypt right now is protest with everybody else because I think personally that Egypt is in a very bad state right now. So basically, I would say that Egypt has every right to protest.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The people of Egypt want a different president because he has been president for the last thirty years. I think this is bad for the government because less people will want to go to Egypt. Also less people will vote because he is the only one running for office.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In Egypt, the last couple of days have been nothing but chaos because the citizens of Egypt want a new president. The same president has been in office for 30 years. Many of the citizens have been protesting very violently. For example, people are lighting cars and buildings on fire. I don't blame the Egyptian citizens for wanting a new president but I think they could do it a little more peacefully. If I were in Egypt right I think I would be very scared and would want to get out of there as soon as possible.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This week in Egypt the people are trying to remove President Hosni Mobarak who has been in power for 30 years. There has been shootings, rioting and unending violence in the streets for the past week. I believe that all the fighting and blood shed is not necessary because it will not bring about democracy. The President should step down to bring peace back to the country.
If I lived in Egypt, I would just try and stay out of it and hope and pray that things would work out peacefully.

    ReplyDelete
  50. In Egypt this week, the people are protesting about the president because he has been in office for about 30 years.I think this is not a good situation for the country because people are getting hurt and American tourists are leaving and this may decrease Egypt's tourists rates. If I was a Egyptian,I would stay indoors at all times because it can be dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  51. In Egypt the people are protesting over the president and his bad choices. I heard on the news that three people were killed and hundreds hurt. I think this situation is bad for their economy and all of the people. If I were an Egyptian right now I would not protest but if I had to I would do it in a peaceful way.

  52. In Egypt the people are protesting over President Hoisni Mobarak. Hoisni Mobarak was president for 30 years. Today the people are losing their homes, getting laid off,and losing their homes. On the news they said that 3 people where killd and hundreds were hurt. Many of the people have been protesting very violently. If I were an Egyption, living in Egypt today I would be protesting with peaceful signs then guns and other weapons. I would be very scared and would get out as soon as possible.

  53. What is happening in Egypt is that the people are fighting for freedom from president Mubarak who has been in power for thirty years. The main issue is that he has offered an ellection but he is the only person they can vote for.The major percentage of protestors are from 20 to 25 because they believe they are Eypts future and they want to make a change.

    ReplyDelete
  54. What is happening in Egypt is that the Egyptians want dictator Hosni Mubarak to step down out of office. This has led to immense violence and protests, and leaders worldwide are trying to end the revolt in a peaceful way. There is also what you could say a civil war erupting between pro-Mubarak forces and revolting protesters.

If I was an Egyptian living in Egypt, I would try to keep everything as peaceful as I could, and get my family and my friends out of Egypt so if there is violence, they will not get hurt. I would also try to calm both forces, and maybe even try to talk to Hosni Mubarak to see if maybe he can help.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The problem in Egypt is that they only have one leader; Hosni Mubarak. He is the only person who ever is elected for power in Egypt's government.

Egypt's people became greatly aggravated and started the protests and violence was all over the streets.

Egypt's military personal is keeping the riots and protests cooled down but it seems like they're not doing much; and what they're doing now obviously isn't enough.

I think that Hosni should resign and if he does he would be saving lives, and the country of Egypt.
